Do You Know This Trivia About Our Nation’s Capital?
As a dental practice operating out of Washington, D.C., we love showing off some trivia about our town. How much of it do you already know?
- Washington D.C. citizens drink more wine per capita than citizens of any state. Be careful; it can stain teeth!
- There is no J Street. The streets running east to west are names with letters, but back when the capital was established, a capital J looked too much like a capital I. (Also why there was no J company during WWII.)
- To keep senators smelling fresh, there are marble bathtubs in the Capitol. They were built when senators lived in boarding houses with no running water while in town for legislative sessions.
- Only one U.S. president is buried in D.C.: Woodrow Wilson, buried at the Washington National Cathedral.
- The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library.
- The original etching of the Lincoln Memorial had a typo!
- The Maine Avenue Fish Market is the oldest of its kind in the country. It’s been operating since 1805.
- The only president who never lived in the White House was George Washington.
- The Washington Monument is the world’s largest obelisk.
- The tip of the Washington Monument is made of aluminum, as it was the world’s most precious metal at the time of construction due to how difficult it was to process. Now we drink soda out of it!
